Extraordinary pair of Foo lions in glazed "sancai" ceramic, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), in dazzling green and ochre tones, with slight brown touches. They are depicted standing, on a square base and with their front paws resting on spherical elements (balls or globes), as a symbol of protection and vigilance. Very expressive faces, large eyes and prominent ears, which give them a majestic air. Robust and muscular bodies, reflecting strength and power.
Very elaborate decoration, intricate details in its fur, as well as decorative patterns on its base.
Traditionally, foo lions are placed at the entrance of homes and temples as guardians, protecting against negative energies and as guardians of fortune.
These figures would become part of a funerary offering.
Condition: Very good condition, some minor chipping at the base.
